PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Since 1964, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
has supported programs offering full-time engineering and science educators
at U.S. colleges and universities the opportunity to participate in NASA
on-going research efforts. Beginning in the summer of 2002, a new program,
the NASA Faculty Fellowship Program (previously known as the ASEE Summer
Faculty Fellowship Program) is being initiated which will continue to
offer science and engineering faculty hands on exposure to NASA’s
research challenges through 10-week summer research residencies and extended
research opportunities at participating NASA research centers, working
closely with NASA colleagues on challenges important to NASA’s
strategic enterprises. The NASA Faculty Fellowship Program (NFFP) is jointly
managed by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and
the Universities Space Research Administration (USRA) and combines aspects
of two successful and long running NASA programs, the NASA/ASEE Summer
Faculty Fellowship Program and the NASA/USRA JOVE Program.
Stipend and Travel
The stipend for the Faculty Fellow will be $1,200 per week for the 10-week
summer program. In addition, for Fellows who must travel 50 miles or
more and must relocate, there will be a relocation allowance of $1,500,
plus travel expenses to cover round trip mileage up to the cost of a
maximum coach airfare of $1,000.
Program Objectives
The primary objectives of the NASA Faculty
Fellowship Program:
- To increase the quality and quantity of research collaborations between
NASA and the academic community that contribute to NASA’s
research objectives;
- To provide research opportunities for college
and university faculty that serve to enrich their knowledge
base;
- To involve students in cutting-edge science and engineering
challenges related to NASA’s strategic enterprises, while
providing exposure to the methods and practices of real-world
research;
- To enhance faculty pedagogy and facilitate interdisciplinary
networking;
- To elevate the understanding of science, mathematics,
and technology through outreach targeting K-12 students and teachers;
- To encourage collaborative research and technology transfer with
other government agencies and the private sector; and
- To establish an effective education and outreach activity to foster greater
awareness of this program.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicant:
- must be a U.S. citizen,
- must have a full-time teaching or
research appointment, in a U.S. university or, preferably with a
minimum of 2 years experience,
- must plan to conduct research on site at the NASA Center,
- may apply to more than one summer
faculty program (NAVY, NASA, DOE, AIR FORCE), but may accept only
one appointment per summer,
