Directorate Brief Description:
The Office of Education's Higher Education Program supports students to
provide opportunities that attract and prepare increasing numbers to
NASA-related Careers and faculty at universities and colleges to
strengthen their research capabilities. Participation in NASA
Education and research programs can stimulate increasing numbers of
students to continue their studies at all levels of the higher
education continuum and to earn advanced degrees in science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The research
conducted at the institutions of higher education by both faculty and
students will contribute to the research needs of NASA's Mission
Directorates.
The Higher Education Program is uniquely poised to contribute to the
Agency's key goal of attracting and maintaining a workforce that is
representative of the Nation's diversity. The Higher Education
program contributes to the Human Capital Mission Support Goal of
assuring a high performing and flexible, mission-aligned workforce by
building a diverse pipeline of science and engineering talent prepared
to serve in the coming decades. As NASA strives to remain at the
forefront of innovation and competitiveness, and aims to accomplish
its challenging mission, it will continue to engage industry and
academia through a myriad of research and education opportunities.
The Higher Education program is prepared to step in to train and
educate the students and faculty in the anticipated future
competencies and occupations and to integrate with the recruitment
processes to attract the ideal candidates to the workforce that
compliment NASA's mission needs.
The Office of Education administers national education efforts that
draw on content from across the Agency. NASA's Educational activities
reflecting a balanced and diverse portfolio of programs: Elementary
and Secondary Education, Higher Education, eEducation, Informal
Education and Minority University Research and Education Projects
(MUREP). As an institutional management office, the OE is responsible
for ensuring compliance with external requirements and laws, NASA-wide
processes, procedures, standards, audits, and accounting related to
Education. It also provides the leadership for coordinating and
integrating NASA's Education strategic framework, implementation
approach, and policies. The OE provides national partnership networks
and infrastructure to disseminate NASA education content and
activities developed by the Mission Directorates, Field Centers, and
education partners. It solicits external advice, and represents the
Agency externally, especially in interactions with Congress, the
Office of Management and Budget, and other federal agencies.
Langley Research Center Office of Education host students who are
pursuing degrees related to the education mission and business
practices of this office. Students may receive hands-on practical
experience with the Higher Education Programs, Pre-College Programs,
or Digital Media Lab programs. Students would gain experience by
working with and observing business operations, working with
pre-service teachers and science, technology, mathematics and
engineering classroom activities, or working with the production of
distance learning outreach programs to name a few.

Education, Business Administration, Video Production,
Photography, English, and other science disciplines depending on the
project requirements.
Directorate Brief Description:
Public Affairs
- Communicating with the public via the news media and outreach
activities.
- Proactively sending speakers knowledgeable about NASA programs to
address stakeholder groups.
- Facilitating communication to, and between, NASA and Langley
employees through a
variety of internal media.
- Providing protocol and logistical services for special events and
guests.
- Informing, advising, and coordinating with senior management.
- Closely coordinating with the NASA Headquarters Strategic
Communications Office to ensure alignment of themes, messages, and activities.
Office of Public Affairs Project Description
An Aerospace History graduate or undergraduate student for a project to review and catalog X-plane engineering papers.
Project Description
History major to work in Langley Archives to refolder National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) research authorizations (1917 to 1958) and add file information to database. Project would also include occasional research of the archives to answer historical inquiries.
