DEVELOP RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Directorate Brief Description:
The NASA DEVELOP Program fosters human capital development to extend NASA science research to local communities. Students demonstrate to community leaders prototype applications of NASA science measurements and predictions addressing local policy issues. The activities are student led, with advisors and mentors from NASA and other partner organizations.

Branch Brief Description:
DEVELOP operates within the NASA Science Mission Directorate Applied Sciences Program. The Applied Sciences Program benchmarks practical uses of NASA-sponsored observations from Earth observation systems and predictions from Earth science models. NASA implements projects that carry forth this mission through partnerships with public, private, and academic organizations. These partnerships focus on innovative approaches for using Earth system science information to provide decision support that can be adapted in applications worldwide. This program focuses on applications of national priority to expand and accelerate the use of knowledge, science, and technologies resulting from the NASA goal of improving predictions in the areas of weather, climate, and natural hazards.

Project Description:
Student teams research NASA science capabilities relevant to community concerns and create advanced computer generated visualizations demonstrating research results. The prototype visualizations use science measurements and predictions to address local policy issues and are shared with community leaders. The activities are student led, with mentors from NASA and partner organizations. DEVELOP is a national, year round internship program, with projects conducted during the fall, spring and summer terms.
